Mission Viejo

Dr. Matthew Burda spent his early years traveling the United States as an “Air Force Brat.” His family settled in Mission Viejo in 1967 where Dr. Burda continued his local education on through Mission Viejo High School and Saddleback College. He then graduated from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, Missouri, class of 1980. After receiving his California Chiropractic license in July of 1980 Dr. Burda went into practice with another local chiropractor in Laguna Hills. After spending 2 years there, he opened his own practice in Mission Viejo where he had a family based chiropractic center until March of 2003. Dr. Burda then took a 3 year sabbatical to Montana in order to spend time with his growing children, Ben and Rachael. Dr. Burda has recently returned to Orange County and is happy to be caring for patients again.

As you may know, Doctors of Chiropractic have yearly relicensing requirements through seminar and adjusting forums. Dr. Burda has focused his training on the adjustment of the spine through classical training. Therefore, his technique is more spine orientated than soft tissue technique. Simply put, he is an electrician for the human body searching for “short circuits.” He also has certification in Specific Upper Cervical Care which has allowed him to see miraculous results with his patients now spanning 20 years.

What Is Specific Upper Cervical Care?

Specific Upper Cervical Care has its roots in the early years of Chiropractic research and progress. At this point in time, it is again a rapidly growing form of chiropractic that focuses on the intimate relationship between the first two bones in the neck, called the upper cervical spine, and a vital portion of the nervous system, known as the brain stem. This relationship is absolutely essential to the body’s ability to preserve and restore health. The brain stem is the control center that extends from the brain down through an opening in the base of your skull, making it vulnerable to injuries or irritation around the upper neck. The brain stem works very much like a telephone cable with thousands of individual wires or nerve fibers sending signals back and forth between the brain and spinal cord to every cell, organ and system in the body. Every nerve impulse between the brain and the body must pass through the brain stem.

The top two vertebrae, the Atlas and Axis, are especially vulnerable to injury or misalignment because they are the most mobile segments of the spine. Misalignment here can produce nerve irritation to the brain stem which, in turn, can affect nearly all vital functions and systems in the body. If neglected, an upper cervical misalignment can lead to irreversible spinal degeneration, chronic ill health, and a shorter life expectancy.

Upper cervical misalignments can be caused by falls, auto accidents, sports, on-the-job injuries, concussions, physical or emotional stress, poor posture, and even birth trauma.

Although the focus of Specific Chiropractic Care is the detection and correction of misalignments of the spine causing nerve interference, some of the common conditions which have responded favorably to Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care are as follows:
